The University of Michigan Alumni Club of Washington, D.C. participates in the Capital Alumni Network (CAN) sports league and fields six teams: flag football, soccer, softball, basketball, and competitive and recreational volleyball. This mix of sports allows members of our Club to participate in sports throughout the year not only for the sake of competition and Wolverine pride, but also for networking, friendship and that intercollegiate spirit with alums from other colleges and universities around the country. If you see a team that you're interested in - don't be shy! - contact the coach and show up on the field!
The DC University of Michigan Alumni Club fields a co-ed competitive basketball team in the CAN Basketball League. League play begins the first week of January and concludes in March, with a playoff to determine the Champion at the end of March. Games are played in the evening in northern Virginia. The Michigan CAN Basketball team has won the League Championship in 2012, 2013, and 2014, won the CAN Sports Achievement Award in 2014, and is the first team to ever three-peat in League History. While we are a competitive team, we have a lot of fun and are a tight knit squad. If you are interested in being a part of this winning tradition or have any questions, please contact Stephen Broyles at email@example.com.
The CAN flag football season takes place on weekends from September to December.
Michigan is one of the oldest teams in the 56 team league that makes up CAN football and continually fields a competitive and alumni-filled roster year after year. With scrimmages, practices, a season-long schedule of games, parties, game watching, social gatherings and happy hours, the Michigan team not only bonds during the football season but throughout the year. The key to the success of this team is based on the relationships of alumni and non-alumni both on and off the field; we are always welcoming new faces!
New to the DC area? Want to meet young professionals like yourself? Looking to satisfy your need to get on the field and let it all go? Join other alumni who share a passion for meeting new friends, competitive sports and continuing a proud Michigan tradition of champions. Come join the Michigan Flag Football team and wear your team colors with pride. Go Blue!
Email the coaches, Steve and Daria, at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info and to join the team!
Every year, our competitive coed soccer team represents UMDC in the spring CAN 11 v. 11 soccer competition, which is an eight-game season followed by a playoff. UM has been by far the most successful team over the last four years, including championships in 2012 and 2013 and near misses in 2011 and 2014. We are working toward another title in 2015. We also have a recreational coed team. While there is only one CAN season per year, both teams are active year-round, competing in non-alumni spring, summer, fall, and winter leagues. All of the games are played on Saturday or Sunday at excellent turf fields in DC. The leagues are coed, with a minimum of three women on the field at all times. Pre-season training/tryouts are held in March and August, but new players are also able to get involved at other times throughout the year. If you are interested in playing, or know someone else who might be, contact Coach Dave Burgett at email@example.com for more information.
The UM DC Alumni Club softball team plays 14 regular season softball games starting in April and ending in July, followed by a tournament in April. Nearly 70 alumni teams compete in the CAN softball season each year. The regular season games are played mostly on weeknights on the Mall or Ellipse at 6:30pm. We will likely hold 1 or 2 practices in late March and early April to get acquainted.
If you are interested in playing on the UM CAN Softball team this year, please send an email to Cheryl Stimpson (firstname.lastname@example.org) with the following:
- Email address
- Phone number
- Year you graduated from University of Michigan or the year(s) you attended U of M
- Whether you played varsity softball or baseball at the college level (for any school).
We are a competitive but fun, social bunch spanning all ages from fresh grads to over-the-hill alumni. We look forward to seeing everybody in the Spring!
The DC Michigan club fields both competitive and recreational volleyball teams in the CAN volleyball season starting in January. The games take place at Bishop Ireton High School on Saturdays and Sundays in Alexandria. Michigan has won the competitive championship in 2012 and 2014, and entered the 2014 recreational championship as the #2 seed out of 20 teams. Having both competitive and recreational teams allows us to open the team to the most experienced players and players with minimal volleyball experience. We are always looking for new team members, so if you are interested, or have any questions, please contact Nicole Taylor at email@example.com.
