University of Michigan Alumni Association

M-TAC "Leaders and Best" Scholarships

M-TAC annually awards one of two scholarships worth up to $2,500 to an incoming or continuing U-M student from the M-TAC area (Greensboro to the coast). These merit- and need-based scholarships honor the legacy of Michigan alumni who have made a difference in Ann Arbor and in the Triangle area of North Carolina. People like Roy and Jean Proffitt and Dave Carte:

  • The Roy and Jean Proffitt Student Scholarship honors the longtime support the Proffitts gave to help send worthy North Carolina students to their beloved University of Michigan.
  • The Dave Carte Scholarship honors former M-TAC President Dave Carte. Dave graduated from the School of Forestry at the University of Michigan in 1965 and earned his Master's Degree in Wood Science and Technology there a year later. Dave and his wife Rosie settled in North Carolina in 1977, raising two more Wolverine fans, Melissa and David. Dave and Rosie are credited with reviving M-TAC in the late 1980's and Dave remained active in the club until a rare cancer took his life on his 59th birthday, January 31, 1998. Among the many stories told about Dave, many club members remember him cooking up homemade bratwursts for the 1997 Michigan-Ohio State game - a crowning last club activity for Dave as that win positioned Michigan to earn its last football National Championship.

Scholarships are awarded in the summer for the upcoming school year and are based upon a written application. All eligible students are sent a letter or email in late winter or early spring notifying them of the availability of the scholarships and providing instructions for applying.

If you have any questions about the M-TAC scholarship program, send an email to M-TAC.
