University of Michigan Alumnae Council Birthday Greeting

The Alumnae Council’s annual Birthday Greeting raises funds for projects that have an impact on women on one of the U-M campuses.

History

Eula dePriest Marcks, ’33, originated the Birthday Greeting campaign in 1961. Today, more than $2 million has been donated to the continuing education of U-M women.  In 2005, the garden of the Michigan League was named after Eula Marcks, with the Marcks’ family donation completing the garden in her honor. The tradition of Ms. Marcks and the Birthday Greeting has made a tremendous impact on the community.

Over the years, the Birthday Greeting campaign has provided an opportunity for U-M alumnae and friends to celebrate the University's influence on their lives by supporting the next generation of women.  In 2016, after more than 50 years of transformative support toward programs with a direct impact on the lives of women at the University of Michigan, the Alumnae Council selected the University of Michigan-Dearborn's SOAR (Student Outreach and Academic Resources) Program as its final Birthday Greeting recipient.

About the 2016 Recipient

The SOAR program helps ensure returning adult learners experiencing socioeconomic challenges achieve their goal of a University of Michigan degree by providing academic, personal, and financial support. Ninety-four percent of SOAR students are women, often balancing their role as a single parent with dependent children. Your contribution toward the 2016 Alumnae Council Birthday Greeting helped provide SOAR students with critical funding during financial emergencies to cover their unmet needs, including transportation, instructional aids, housing costs, utility bills, and emergency food assistance.

Together, we have provided substantial funding to programs supporting women and for that the Alumnae Council thanks you.
